The Standard for Hurricane Resistant Residential Construction (SSTD 10-99), is a prescriptive guideline developed by the Southern Building Code Congress International (SBCCI) to enhance the structural integrity of residential buildings in high-wind regions. Published in 1999, it provides detailed design and construction requirements for one- and two-story wood-framed homes, as well as one- to three-story concrete or masonry dwellings. The standard emphasizes continuous load paths, proper anchoring, and reinforced connections to mitigate wind uplift and shear forces. It also addresses material specifications, such as corrosion-resistant fasteners, to ensure durability in coastal environments. SSTD 10-99 is widely recognized and utilized in areas prone to hurricanes and severe windstorms.
